Running a Hard Drive Motor (BLDC) with an ESC
Running an old Brushless DC (BLDC) Hard Drive Motor with a ESC, RC electronic speed control. These are decades old hard drives with large aluminum platers that I have been meaning to spin up for years to do some magnetic projects. I have larger older 2 GB server drives I plan to spin up next to make a magnetic levitator. Hard Drive Motors are Brushless DC Motors (BLDC Motor) which are 3 phase motors. BLDC Brushless DC motors can be sensored or sensorless BLDC. These hard drive BLDC motors are sensorless. The Hard Drive Motors are being driven by an RC ESC (Electronic Speed Control) powered by a regulated power supply and controlled by a servo controller but could be an RC transmitter and receiver as well.
Any cheap brushless speed control (BLDC ESC) and Servo Tester combined with a power supply or battery will work. See the following Amazon Affiliate Links:

Spinning Hard Drives & Magnets | Lenz’s Law Demo – Magnets Levitating on Hard Drive Platters
Magnets & Hard Drives | Lenz’s Law Demo – Several Different Magnets Levitating on Hard Drive Platters. Levitating magnets above spinning aluminum plates – Lenz’s Law demonstration DIY. Demonstration of Lenz’s Law principle by levitating magnets above spinning aluminum hard drive platers. Lenz’s Law description short and simple: The magnet induces a voltage in the aluminum plates due to the relative motion. This induced voltage creates an opposing magnetic field which repels the magnet and cause it to levitate. This is just a quick preliminary lenz law demo before we build a Lenz’s Law demonstration apparatus for a Lenz’s Law science project. Check out or other lenz’s law demo videos including copper pipe and aluminum heat sink magnetic demonstration.
