Solving Rubik’s Cube Parity

In this Rubik’s Cube Parity guide with video tutorial, we learn how to solve OLL and PLL Parity on the 4×4 Cube and Parity on the 5×5 Cube. But what about parity on 3×3 Cube? See bottom of post.
This post is still under construction and more info, diagrams and video will be added.

Many of the Cube Algorithms I use come from Dan Harris’ Book Speedsolving the Cube:  https://amzn.to/41EXXEG . I highly recommend this book!

Speedsolving the Cube
Speedsolving the Cube: Easy to Follow Step-by-Step Instructions for Many Popular 3-D Puzzles by Dan Harris

The algorithms used in this 4×4 Parity video:
4×4 OLL Parity Algorithm:  [ (Rr)2  B2  U2  (Ll)  U2  (Rr)’  U’2  (Rr)  U’2  F2  (Rr)  F2  (Ll)’  B2  (Rr)2 ]
4×4 PLL Parity Algorithm:  [ (Rr)2  R’2  U2  (Rr)2  R’2  (Uu)2  (Rr)2  R’2  (Uu)2  U2 ]
3×3 Parity Algorithm?
*Note U2 = U’2 but sometimes one direction is easier to finger trick than the other.
*Note (Rr)2 R’2 = r2 (just the inner slice) I’ll show in another video
4×4 PLL (r2) Parity Algorithm:  [ r2  U2  r2  (Uu)2  r2  u2 ]

4×4 Rubik’s Cube Notation:
(Rr) = (R) Right outer side and (r) right inner slice both turned same time
Some notation uses w for “wide” turns.
(Rr) = Rw ,  w  stands for “wide” turn and means turn both outer and inner slice.
(Rr)2 = Turn both R & r Two Turns

Some notation uses (R2 r2) to represent (Rr)2
R = Turn Right outer side CW
R’ = Turn Right outer side CCW
r = Turn right inner slice CW
r’ = Turn right inner slice CCW
L = Turn Left outer side CW
L’ = Turn Left outer side CCW
l = Turn left inner slice CW
l’ = Turn left inner slice CCW
*Note ( l ) is lowercase L for left but looks exactly like uppercase ( i )

U = Turn the Top CW
U’ = Turn the Top CW
u = Turn the Top inner slice CW
u’ = Turn the Top inner slice CCW
B = Turn Back side CW
B’ = Turn Back side CCW
F = Turn the Front side CW
*CW & CCW rotation is as if facing that side

General Rubik’s Cube Notation:
( ‘ ) Apostrophe = Prime or CCW rotation
2  = Rotate twice
X  = Axis Rotation of entire Cube same direction as R
Y  = Axis Rotation of entire Cube same direction as U
Z  = Axis Rotation of entire Cube same direction as F

Solving 3×3 Cube Parity

No such 3×3 parity exists. It’s mathematically impossible but a twisted corner (easy on modern speed cubes) can make it seem possible to a beginner. I didn’t realize how common this was until the repeated questions on my 3×3 Tutorial and 2×2 Tutorials.

*need to make pic showing top, bottom, front and back of fake 3×3 cube parity

Solving Megaminx Parity

No such Megaminx parity exists. It’s mathematically impossible but a twisted corner (easy on modern speed cubes) can make it seem possible to a beginner. I didn’t realize how common this was until the repeated questions on my 3×3 Tutorial and 2×2 Tutorials so I added it in my Megaminx Last Layer Tutorial and still get questions about how to solve a single twisted corner. See Megaminx one Corner twisted 30:18 and 38:40
*need to add photos of twisted corner.

They call it ‘speedcubing’- and mind-bending blur of quick twists and turns that solves Rubik’s Cube in times that have been clocked at less than 20 seconds! Today, thanks to the 2003 revival of the Rubik’s World Championships, speedcubing is spreading like wildfire. Here, complete with detailed illustrations and basic as well as advanced solving techniques, is the ultimate speedcuber’s guide. It not only gives the solution to the familiar 3X3X3 cube (which has 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 – that’s 43 quintillion – possible positions), but also the 2X2X2, 4X4X4, and staggeringly difficult 5X5X5 puzzles. With millions of cubes out there and countless would-be champions looking for tips to improve their times, this is the definitive manual for this unique sport.
